I'm In High School… How Can I Write A Great Resume?

A question I get a lot of the time is, “What are some tips for me if I’m in high school and I want to create a great high school resume?”

First of all, don’t stress out, don’t worry! It’s not the end of the world if you don’t have any or much experience. This is the world of high school resumes; a lot of people are focusing on studies and are doing bits and pieces.

Now that you’ve got your resume and you want to actually go out and get some jobs and get that experience… you want to start looking for what are the things you already do which really reflect something about you and something about your ability to work and work effectively.

Do you have any experiences where you were on a team, where you were volunteering, where you were actually contributing to society?

Is there anything where you can actually showcase some achievement or some results and the thing to get here is, that it doesn’t have to be just a job.

Your resume is **more than just about the job and the experiences that you have in a formal setting. It’s also very much about your other skills and experiences and also the other results and achievements that show up there.

I would start by understanding that every single thing that you do matters.

Everything that you do to help out around your community, help out in different community groups or different sporting teams.

Do you have a role in your sporting team? Are you a vice-captain or do you have any responsibility at all?

Start noticing these things and if you start to notice that you don’t have any of these experiences or you have very little experiences, it will hopefully give you the ability to say “Okay, how can I go out and get that?”

I had someone reach out to me to say, “Hey, I want an internship, I’m willing to do absolutely anything and work any amount of time.”

I jumped on a phone call with him and he actually told me that he had been putting off reaching out for about a year. That was a really good example because it was the right time; it’s not always that when you reach out to someone that has something.

But that the more you can go out and share with people and say “Hey, I’m just out of high school, keen for experience, keen for anything”.

The more people that you tell, your network and the people who know you and it could just be friends or family to start off with.

But the more people that hear that, the more people that might be able to give you something that is that stepping stone.

You don’t just have to rely on the things that you can find out or research yourself; you can also have your community support you.

To sum up, don’t stress out if you don’t have much there, start looking at what are the experiences that you already have, team experiences, community involvement.

It’s not just about jobs; it’s very much about your skills and achievements. It can be hard to go out and create the experiences that you want to have and be able to have on your resume in the future.
